Shortcuts

Four default shortcuts, all global, all rebindable. One to dictate, one to stop, one to search your templates, and one per template to record, rewrite and paste in a single key.

The default keymap

Every shortcut is global: it works from any app, without switching to WhisperWizard first.

  • Option Shift Space Start a recording. Opens the recorder for plain dictation, no template. Recording is a toggle, not push-to-talk: you do not need to hold anything.
  • Option Escape Stop. Stops the recording, transcribes it, runs the template if there is one, and pastes the result where your cursor was.
  • Option Space Open the template palette. A searchable list of every template. Type to filter, use the arrow keys to move, press Return to start recording with that template, Esc to close.
  • Control Option 1 to Control Option 6 Cast a template. Each built-in template has its own shortcut. One key starts recording with that template already chosen, so the rewrite happens on stop.

The built-in templates and their keys

The app ships with six templates, each already bound:

  • Control Option 1 The Polished Reply
  • Control Option 2 The Translator
  • Control Option 3 The Outliner
  • Control Option 4 The Tone Shift
  • Control Option 5 The Journal Keeper
  • Control Option 6 The Action Extractor

Every one of them also strips filler words like "um" and "uh". You can edit them, unbind them, or delete them.

Rebind a shortcut

  1. Open the menu-bar icon and choose Settings.
  2. Under WhisperWizard shortcuts ("Customize the default shortcuts to perform actions with WhisperWizard"), hover the box of the shortcut you want to change.
  3. While hovering, press the new combination. The box shows "Record shortcut while hovering this box" until it captures one.
  4. Save. The new shortcut works immediately, from every app.

Template shortcuts are set in each template's editor instead: open History and Templates, pick a template, and record its shortcut the same way. Custom templates can have a shortcut too.

When a shortcut is refused

If you see "Shortcut is not valid. Usually it's because you are using the Option (⌥) modifier key in your shortcut.", macOS would not let WhisperWizard register that combination. Some Option combinations type special characters, and others are already claimed by macOS or another app. Add ⌃ or ⇧, or pick another key.

The menu-bar menu

Everything the shortcuts do is also in the menu-bar icon, with the current shortcut shown next to each item: Select template, New recording, History and Templates, Settings and Quit.
