Your OpenAI Key. No Middleman.

Your OpenAI account, no middleman, no subscription. Audio goes from your Mac to OpenAI and the text comes straight back.

The data path

Where your voice goes, all of it.

WhisperWizard runs on your own OpenAI API key, so your recordings go straight to OpenAI: we never see or store them on our servers. The Mac app keeps its own History of your recordings on your Mac.
  1. Your Mac

    01. Recorder

Records while you speak and saves the audio locally.

  2. Your OpenAI account

    02. Whisper

Transcribes the audio on your API key. Language is detected.

  3. Your OpenAI account

    03. Your template

Your prompt runs on the model you picked. Skipped for raw dictation.

  4. Your Mac

    04. Your cursor

Pasted into the app you were in; clipboard put back; kept in History.

WhisperWizard servers: none. There is no box of ours in this picture. We never see your audio, your text, your templates or your key.

What it costs to run

$29 once. Then only what you use.

The license is the only money WhisperWizard ever sees. After that, OpenAI bills your usage to your own account at their pay-as-you-go API rates, so a quiet month costs little and a busy one shows up on a bill you control.
  • Per minute of audio

    Transcription

Whisper bills each recording by its length. Every recording uses it, with or without a template.

  • Per piece of text

    Your template

When a template runs, OpenAI bills the prompt and the answer by length, at your chosen model's rate. Raw dictation skips this.

  • Per month, your cap

    Your limit

Set a monthly budget in OpenAI's billing settings and keep the bill exactly where you want it.

Set or review your limit in your OpenAI billing settings. A ChatGPT Plus subscription does not cover API usage; they are billed separately.

Key safety

Your key, your rules.

An API key is a password to your OpenAI bill. Here is everything WhisperWizard does with it.
  • You paste it once, during setup. It stays in WhisperWizard's settings on your Mac.
  • It is only ever sent to OpenAI, with your own requests. There is no other place for it to go.
  • Create a key just for WhisperWizard, so its usage is easy to spot and easy to revoke.
  • Rotate it any time in your OpenAI account, then paste the new one into Settings.

Questions

About your key.

What do I need to start using WhisperWizard?

You will need the following to use WhisperWizard: an OpenAI API key, a WhisperWizard license key, and a Mac with macOS 10.13 or newer (Intel) or macOS 11 or newer (Apple Silicon).

Are there ongoing costs after I buy a license?

WhisperWizard itself has no subscription - your license is a one-time purchase. Because the app runs on your own OpenAI API key, OpenAI bills your API usage directly to your OpenAI account at their pay-as-you-go rates. You can review or cap that usage in your OpenAI billing settings.

Can I use my ChatGPT Plus subscription for WhisperWizard?

No, you can't. Your ChatGPT Plus subscription and OpenAI API key are different. You need to have your own OpenAI API key to use WhisperWizard.

What do I do if my OpenAI API Key is not working?

WhisperWizard shows "OpenAI API Key is not valid." when OpenAI rejects your key. Check billing first, in your OpenAI billing settings:

  • Add a payment method. Keys without billing are refused by the API.
  • Make sure your usage limit is not set too low.

Then check that you copied the whole key (it starts with sk-) and that it was not revoked, and paste it again in Settings. The full walkthrough is in Your OpenAI API Key. If you still have an error, email us at [email protected]; a human reads every message.

Is my data safe?

WhisperWizard has no server of its own, so we don't store your recordings, transcripts or templates. They stay on your Mac (see History) until you delete them. Your requests go directly to OpenAI with your own API key, so OpenAI's privacy rules apply to them.
